I have wanted a little free library for years! I designed this modern number with a living roof and Jason helped turn my dream into a reality. If you want the complete DIY details you can find them on the DIY Network. This spacious design allows for lots of books, even bulky cookbooks and tall magazines. I wanted a space where I could share fiction and non-fiction for kids and adults alike. The coolest part is how much it has already gotten used and neighbors have shared so many cool books!
If you're not familiar with little free libraries, they work on the take a book, share a book principal. They are very popular in our area so I didn't even need to add a sign explaining the rules. I love seeing books I've enjoyed get carried off on new adventures and we have lucked out with a very generous community with great book taste!
If you want to make your own library and you're looking for a good way to stock it, check your library for sales. I find cool books for one dollar or less and once I'm done reading them, I can happily pass them along by sticking them in the little free library. As an admitted book hoarder this has been so good for me. Instead of my house being overrun with books, they can go on to inspire others in my community. I've also learned that when someone adds a book I really want to read I better bring it inside quick or miss my chance. I love the magic of books and this is a simple and easy way to spread that love.
I wanted to share a few notes on this design and tips for building your own. This little library is several months old and so far it is holding up very well. It has weathered many rain storms with no leaks and the living roof is thriving. It is not the simplest DIY project, but it is was very affordable and the building process was quite fun. I chose to stain the wood for a midcentury inspired look but painting it to match your house would be another cool option. I highly recommend painting the interior white, it really helps the contents pop.
Be sure to plant something on the roof that can withstand weather, if you are in a place that freezes succulents might not be hardy enough. Consider the height of your library carefully. I wanted to be sure that kids could peer in but adults didn't have to stoop too low. Lastly, if little free libraries are new to your community consider including a sign or registering your box at littlefreelibrary.org.
I hope this inspires you to build a little sharing library of your own.
