I've been wanting to share this tutorial for a leather chevron necklace and triangle bracelet for some time now. I originally created these for the Handmade Winter eBook. Super simple and equally chic, these statement pieces make the perfect gift. Hip sisters, cool friends, and rad moms can be hard to shop (or make) for; leather and chain jewelry to the rescue! With just a few simple, affordable supplies you can make your own!
To Make Leather Jewelry You'll Need
- Leather, small scraps work great for this project
- Chain (26” for a necklace, 6” for a bracelet)
- Jump rings (1/4” in diameter)
- Clasps (optional for necklace)
- Craft knife
- Straight edge/ruler
- Self-healing mat (or piece of cardboard)
- Small leather punch (or sharp tool to make holes)
- Needle nose pliers
How To Make Leather Jewelry
1. Cut the leather
For the necklace - Cut a 2” square. Mark a point 1” in and ½” down from the top of the square. Using a straight edge cut a line from the top right corner of the square to the point you marked, repeat on the left side to cut out a triangle. Use that triangle as a template to create your chevron. Place the triangle on top of your square with its long edge in line with the point you just cut out. Cut along the bottom edges. Repeat once more. You will end up with two chevron shapes.
For the bracelet – cut an equilateral triangle with 1” sides
2. Punch the holes
For the necklace – On one chevron punch holes on the top and bottom of each short edge. On the other chevron, punch the holes only on the top.
For the bracelet – punch a hole at one point and the center of the opposite side.
3. Attach the rings and chain
For the necklace – Using pliers, open your jump rings. Use the rings to connect the two chevrons (single punched on the bottom), pinch the rings closed. On the top holes of the top chevron use a ring to attach the chain, creating a long loop.
For the bracelet – Using rings and pliers, attach the chain to each side of the triangle.
4. Add clasps
For the necklace – This step is optional because the necklace is long enough to go over your head. Follow the bracelet instructions if you’d like to add one.
For the bracelet – Cut the chain in half and use your pliers and jump rings to add a clasp.
