The kids are back in school which means it's time to pack lunch! I've partnered with Got Milk? to bring you this fun, simple DIY reusable sandwich wrap. And when I say simple, I mean it; the most basic version of this wrap only requires a few stitches, you don't even have to use a sewing machine!
Tired of buying and throwing out baggies? Slightly concerned that your kiddo sets his sandwich on the lunch room table? Me too! This reusable sandwich wrap means no more waste, and when open, it acts as a placemat! I've even added an optional chalkboard note tag! That's right, packing a healthy lunch just got a whole lot cooler!
I have to admit, I am not the lunch packer of the household. My husband Jason packs lunches each night, and he does a great job of making sure Jude gets a delicious and nutritious midday meal. One way to make sure Jude gets plenty of protein (plus calcium, vitamin D, and more) is by sending him with a container of milk. Plus, I'm pretty sure there's no other beverage worthy of a PB&J.
Now are you ready to wrap that sandwich up in style?
DIY Reusable Sandwich Wrap Tutorial
You'll need:
- 1/2 yard of unbleached cotton canvas or a cloth napkin
- 13" length of 1/4" elastic
- Optional - 3" x 4" piece of blackboard cloth
- Optional - snap or velcro
Note: I chose to make this with cotton canvas so that it can be tossed into the wash. I didn't use wipeable material because there are some questions about its safety. These are so cheap and easy to make, you can easily whip up five and be set for the week!
Directions:
Note: If you are using a cloth napkin, skip to step two.
- Cut your fabric into a 18" square and round the corners. Serge, zigzag, or hem the raw edges.
- Fold your elastic in half and stitch it to the edge of your wrap, halfway down one side of your square. Note: You could stop here, I told you it was easy! Tip: if you're worried about the raw edges of elastic fraying, hit them with a little heat from a lighter before stitching them down.
- To add the chalkboard tag apply one side of a snap or velcro to your chalkcloth piece and the other side to your wrap, placing it a few inches up and over from where you attached your elastic.

Now write a nice note and tuck that yummy sandwich into your kiddo's lunch box, along with a few healthy snacks. And don't forget the milk!
