Anyone who knows me well knows that I am obsessed with succulents, and this obsession leads me to do very out of character things like "borrow" cuttings every chance I get. I had a massed quite the collection when I came across the idea of framed succulents in Sunset magazine.
Luckily, I have a very talented carpenter for a grandpa, and he made me an 18" square succulent frame for my birthday. It was beautiful before I even added the plants.
I filled it with soil, stuck my cuttings into the grid, and allowed them to take root.
It took me a while to decide where I wanted to hang it (during which time I lost a few to frost - oops!), but then I realized that under the entry light on my front porch was perfect.
That spot is protected from frost, gets lots of light, and it says "Welcome to my home, please come in, but first, check out my awesome succulent collection." To replace a few blank spots since hanging I have used Jaime of Prudent Baby's genius idea of holding them to the grid with hair pins until they root.
The only problem with this sleek succulent display? It has made me want to change my whole porch/entry: new light, house numbers, door, shutters, seating ... you get the idea.
Here's to beautiful collections and the inspiration they provide.
P.S. - Thank you Grandpa Dick!
