I'm a big fan of traditions, and our annual pumpkin carving party is one of my favorites. It actually started in college, and while it is currently less of an excuse to drink a lot while wielding knives, it is still something I look forward to each year. We always throw this get-together right before Halloween, so that the pumpkins look great for the main event. I thought I'd share some pictures from last year, plus some pumpkin carving party tips I've learned over the years. This isn't a costume party, but I did sort of dress up last year:
Tip number one: make sure that the food is easy and can be eaten anytime, some will be carving while others eat. I usually do a big spread of snack stuff (see below) plus Roasted Autumnal Squash Soup and Bistro Sandwiches. (Sorry I haven't posted those recipes yet I will try to do it ASAP).
Next: make sure everyone brings a pumpkin. We invested in some strong little saws and other wood working tools (cheap at the hardware store) that we bust out each year; we couldn't handle the rage those little plastic carving sets induced. Also, I make sure that I have lots of tea lights, markers, and inspiration, like Martha's Halloween Special Edition. Then we set up the carving station in the garage:
Notice the power drill? We get pretty into it because the one with the best Jack O'Lantern wins a small prize and serious bragging rights. Look how cool the pumpkins turned out:
I can't wait for this year's pumpkin carving party, and I hope this inspires you to host one of your own!
